Location, Location…

Where would be an ideal location for such a base? Most of Antarctica is already claimed by 7 nations, and the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) has a sizable presence as well. The only unclaimed territory lies between 158˚W and 103’24˚W, also known as Marie Byrd land. We could, of course ask for a parcel of the claimed land, but i doubt any government would be amenable to such a request. The top priorities for situating any colony in Antarctica, at least as I can see it, would be the following:

  • Temperature Extremes
  • Mean usable yearly sunlight/radiation
  • Accessibility 
  • Connectivity
